trains! [May. 17th, 2010|02:50 pm]

Apparently there are train you can take from Beijing through Moscow through as much of europe as you want. Ian did this a few winters ago and it's way cheaper and less crowded in winter, and perfectly toasty inside the train, with 30 minute stops in various cities, cheap food along the way, free water on the train, decent sleeper cars... I really want to do this next winter or the next. Ian said it's best to book the ticket through the central chhinese travel agency (cheapest, I assume). And most of the expense is in getting visas for all the necessary countries. It sounds like a great and cheap way to see central asia and spend it cozily inside a nice old fashioned train.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/China_Far_East_Railway ; cf. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trans-Siberian_Railway ?

Leah and I have been discussing doing this since we met.

Also, any time someone mentions Bulgaria I am required to post this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_jQ2SjhtVjM

I've been thinking about the Trans-Siberian railway for a while now. I almost think it might be boring. And I'd really want to hit Kazakhstan and do a few longer stops. I'm sure the Chinese side is easier to deal with, but if you go through China I don't know if you can start the trip in Moscow.

From what I understand, it's the most expensive if you book the through Beijing to Moscow trip---tickets are in high demand, and the train has only the more expensive classes of service. It can be quit a bit cheaper if you make stops in the cities along the way and take a series of shorter hops.

interesting idea. I hear it's cheaper in winter (since the demand is so much lower), hence the idea of doing it in winter, but yeah, prob also going to be expensive. but interesting idea on doing shorter hops.
